Help for Children who struggle with phonics based learning systems

Phonics based reading programs are very good for children who do not have a problem with the area of their brain that is used to encode and decode words using sounds (the Broca's area).  If there is a difficulty in this area your child will have trouble learning to read using techniques that rely on being able to hear the sounds in words.  Trouble in this area will affect your child's reading, spelling and speech.  They may be diagnosed as having dyslexia, ADD or other learning problem.

Does your child:

  • mispronounce words
  • avoid using words because of uncertainty in how to say them
  • have flat and monotonous sounding speech
  • have difficulty blending and segmenting the sounds of words and/or
  • have difficulty in thinking and talking at the same time?

How the Arrowsmith Program helps children with problems learning to read using a phonics based method in Perth:

The Broca's Speech Pronunciation exercise in the Arrowsmith Program strengthens this area of the brain and:

  • improves your child's capacity for hearing the sounds in words
  • your child's sound-symbol correspondence improves
  • your child's phonemic memory, necessary for the phonemic aspect of reading, develops
  • your child's ability to pronounce multi-syllabic words improves
  • your child's ability to read with greater oral expression improves
